Bikram Yoga

The following informational article discusses Bikram Yoga, which people also refer to as Hot Yoga.

Of course Bikram Yoga isn't the only type of Yoga that people call hot Yoga, because any Yoga performed in a heated environment and/or humid environment can also be called hot.

Bikram Yoga History

Bikram Choudhury and company from Los Angeles developed Bikram Yoga.

Bikram Yoga is done in a room heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity of 50 percent. Classes are guided by explicit direction of 26 Yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises. Bikram Yoga classes last for about ninety-minutes. People of all ages, levels, and body types practice jointly in Birkram Yoga.

Choudhury asserts that his method is the only true hatha yoga practiced in the West. Many schools reject that contention.

Bikram Choudhury calls himself the "Yogi to the Stars." He resides in Beverly Hills and instructs at the Yoga College of India. Despite its name, the college actually is in Los Angeles, California. He also teaches in Calcutta, India, and other locations around the world, such as London, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Paris.

Bikram Yoga Intellectual Property

Bikram Choudhury claims to have copyrights and trademarks for various names and workouts related to Bikram Yoga. He aggressively attempts to enforce these, but has met much resistance from the Yoga community in the West. Notably, most people reject his claim of owning the sequence of asanas in Bikram Yoga. Many people in the Yoga community contend that Bikram cannot have exclusive control over a series of postures derived from traditional practices. (It is worth noting that these postures have existed long before Bikram's birth!)
