Members of the California Yoga Teachers Association founded Yoga Journal in May 1975. They wanted to unite the Yoga community by starting a magazine that combined the philosophy of classic Yoga with the modern science's knowledge.

John Abbott purchased the magazine in 1998. He then placed Kathryn Arnold as the new editor-in-chief, after which they redesigned and re-launched the magazine. Paid circulation has increased by approximately 75% since their arrival, and the magazine now has over 1 million readers.

Active Interest Media purchased Yoga Journal in 2006. They own other publications including Black Belt Magazine, Vegetarian Times, and Southwest Art Magazine.
